Today's 5 Things: Start your Monday smart

CNN: Five Things for your New Day
Monday, July 25, 2016
Even by this July's standards, there were a ton of news over the weekend. Here are the 5 things you need to know to Get Up to Speed and Out the Door:

The DNC has a problem

This week's Democratic National Convention was supposed to be Hillary Clinton's kumbaya moment - a chance for her to make nice with ticked off Bernie supporters. But then WikiLeaks rumbled in like a dark cloud, showering down thousands of leaked emails that show DNC staffers favoring Hillary over Bernie Sanders in the primaries. What you now have is:
a) Bernie supporters descending at the convention, with a bone to pick
b) Several swing state Dems skipping Philly altogether
c) DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz updating her LinkedIn profile (But her exit was a long time coming)

Clinton has a running mate

Tim Kaine admits he's "boring." So, forgive the collective yawn when Hillary Clinton picked him as her No. 2. But this Kaine is pretty able: He's one of only 20 people in U.S. history to serve as mayor, governor and senator. He's not lost a campaign in 20 years. And he answered those who questioned whether he'll be an effective attack dog by letting loose a few choice anti-Trump zingers this weekend. Oh, and he's pretty good on the harp. (Click to view)

Germany is reeling

What is happening in southern Germany? Last week, an Afghan teen carried out a stabbing attack on a train. On Friday, a German-Iranian killed nine people in Munich. Yesterday,  a Syrian asylum seeker killed a woman with a machete. And last night, another Syrian asylum seeker exploded a suicide bomb outside a music festival. Until now, Germany's been seen as the most welcoming of all European nations for refugees fleeing war. The spate of violence will undoubtedly put pressure on Angela Merkel's to rethink that.

Afghanistan's in turmoil

A UN report that came out today said more than 5,000 civilians were killed or maimed in Afghanistan in just the first six months of this year - that's higher than any other time since counting began. As if to underscore that point, two ISIS fighters detonated their explosives belt during a peaceful rally in Kabul over the weekend. More than 80 died; 260 were wounded.

The U.S. is burning up

It's going to be a miserable scorcher of a day today, with the heat index likely to reach 100+ across dozens of states in central and eastern U.S. A heat index, fyi, is how hot it feels. So, say, the temperature is 96 F and the humidity is 65%, it'll feel like 121F! Scientists say the record temperatures may be part of global warming. Every. Single. Month this year has been the hottest ever recorded.
