Friday's 5 Things: Donald Trump's dark message

CNN: Five things for your New Day
Friday, July 22, 2016
GOP's wild week. Donald Trump's dark message. Roger Ailes' swift downfall. It's Friday, and here are the 5 things you need to know to Get Up to Speed and Out the Door:

1. GOP Convention

When Donald Trump promised us an over-the-top convention, he meant exactly that. The man of the week accepted the Republican presidential nomination last night, closing out a wild convention in Cleveland. Yet despite a cheerful crowd and daughter Ivanka Trump's glowing introduction, the four-day event got dragged down by daily distractions. They included Ted Cruz's defiant snub of the presidential nominee, wife Melania Trump's plagiarized tribute and a grand helicopter entrance that stole the spotlight from others. Next up: The Democratic National Convention next week.

2. Donald Trump

Trump marched into the arena last night with a dark message: The U.S. is in a sorry state. He listed problems ailing the nation, including unemployment, rising murder rates, police killings and terrorism. But fear not. He will save America from all that once elected. "The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end ... beginning on January 20th 2017," he said. During his 75-minute speech, he issued grim statistics on immigration, Hillary Clinton's legacy and the economy, among others. He said his convention will not tolerate lies, so we fact-checked his numbers.

3. Roger Ailes

Roger Ailes is out at Fox News. The swift downfall of the CEO started two weeks ago when  former employee Gretchen Carlson filed a sexual harassment suit against him. Within days, more women came forward with similar accounts of harassment. Yesterday, media mogul Rupert Murdoch decided enough -- and showed him the door. Murdoch, the patriarch of parent company 21st Century Fox, is taking over as CEO for now.

4. Florida shooting

The shooting of an African-American behavior therapist who was helping a man with autism in North Miami was accidental. So says a police union representing the officer who shot him. It says the officer believed the man with autism posed a danger and intended to shoot him, but accidentally shot Charles Kinsey instead. Kinsey's shooting Monday sparked outrage after footage showed him lying on the ground holding both hands in the air.

5. Baton Rouge shooting

An Ohio rapper says he received an email from gunman Gavin Long less than an hour before he killed three law enforcement officers in Louisiana. In a video posted online, Yarima Karama  said the email included images of a handwritten letter with the subject line: "manifesto." Long ambushed Baton Rouge officers on Sunday, killing three of them and wounding three others, according to authorities.
