Thursday's 5 Things: Ted Cruz gets his revenge

CNN: Five things for your New Day
Thursday, July 21, 2016
Rocky night at the convention. Ted Cruz goes rogue. And Turkey's just getting started. It's Thursday, and here are the 5 things you need to know to Get Up to Speed and Out the Door:

1. GOP convention

Another day, another dose of drama at the Republican National Convention. Last night was supposed to be Mike Pence's coming-out party as a VP nominee, but Donald Trump just couldn't let him have all the fun, and kept the spotlight on himself with a grand helicopter entrance. Just before Pence's speech, Ted Cruz stole his thunder with a defiant address that ended with jeers from the crowd. By the time it was Pence's turn to give his first big speech as a VP pick, he was no longer the buzz. Nevertheless, he made an impassioned effort to unite Republicans around Trump, describing him as a latter day Ronald Reagan who never quits.

2. Ted Cruz

Ted Cruz finally got his revenge. The party's runner-up gave a speech at the convention yesterday but uttered Donald Trump's name just once -- to congratulate him for earning the nomination. Instead of using the speaking slot to sing Trump's praises, he used the opportunity to pitch the ideological brand of conservatism that endears him to the GOP base. The once warm crowd quickly turned on him -- but the stunning political theater did not end there. Trump suddenly appeared in the arena at the end of his speech, giving a thumbs-up and ruining his moment. Awwwwkward. Let's just say Trump's allies had some not-so-nice things to say about Cruz after that.

3. Turkey

The Turkish President is on a roll. After a failed coup attempt left hundreds dead over the weekend, the government fired or suspended tens of thousands of people suspected of any involvement. We're talking teachers, journalists, police officers, judges, military officials -- you name them. Then yesterday, he imposed a three-month state of emergency to ensure "viruses" in the military are cleansed. "It is very similar to a cancer," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says. "It is like a metastasis that is going on in the body that is Turkey." The crackdown is increasingly looking like a witch-hunt to suppress dissent.

4. Alligator attack

The parents of a toddler killed by an alligator at a Disney World hotel will not sue the Walt Disney Company. Matt and Melissa Graves' 2-year-old son drowned after the alligator grabbed him as he was walking in a lagoon at the Orlando resort last month. They said while they are heartbroken by the loss of their son, Lane, their main focus is on the health of their family.

5. Roger Ailes

Just how important is CEO Roger Ailes to Fox News? Well, let's just say he's "The $2.3 Billion Man." Fox News is so profitable, investors are freaking out over reports its CEO is on the way out following sexual harassment allegations. And they have a reason to be worried. A research firm estimates Fox News generated $2.3 billion in sales last year -- a jump of 14% from two years ago. The company accounts for a large share of its parent company's value, according to experts.
