Don't show Trump these TV ratings; Apple Music orders 'Carpool Karaoke;' Julian Assange speaks; Rupert writes to Fox News staffers

For the history e-books
Anderson Cooper, 8pm ET, CNN: "Tonight, history is made again in the city where American democracy was born: Hillary Clinton officially becoming the first woman nominated for president of the United States by a major political party."

With Bill Clinton's keynote coming up, here's an abbreviated edition of our nightly newsletter...
What will Wikileaks publish next? And when?
Julian Assange says Wikileaks might release "a lot more material" relevant to the U.S. election. Speaking with CNN's Matthew Chance today, "Assange refused to confirm or deny a Russian origin for the mass email leak" from the DNC. Assange is fond of saying Wikileaks is a "source protection organization."

"We like to create maximum ambiguity as to who our sources are," he told Chance...
Assange seeking to harm Hillary's chances
NYT's Charlie Savage says Assange "foreshadowed" the document dump during an interview six weeks ago "and made it clear that he hoped to harm Hillary Clinton's chances of winning the presidency." Key point: Among other things, "the disclosures are also the latest chapter in the long-running tale of Mr. Assange's battles with the Obama administration..."
#DemConvention
How about that roll call?
Now back to Clinton and back to Philly. How about that roll call? At one point Rachel Maddow, co-hosting the coverage on MSNBC, urged the producers to take her face off screen and show more of the proceedings in the hall. "This is the best television I have seen in years," she said. The payoff came at 6:53pm, when Bernie Sanders stepped to the mic and asked delegates to accept Clinton. Along with the cablers, the ABC and CBS nightly newscasts broke format to show the moment live...
A sit-in on the media's floor
Moments later, "dozens of Sanders supporters marched out of the convention hall" and into one of the media tents. "A sit-in in the press file is solid media strategy," Byron Tau remarked. "'Occupying' the press file is like walking into a kindergarten classroom with cookies." The chaos and inconvenience subsided after about an hour...
Don't tell Trump...
RNC night one: 23 million viewers from 10 til 11pm. DNC night one: 26 million from 10 til 11:30pm. These are the apples-to-apples #'s from Nielsen. "Don't tell Donald Trump," one of my Twitter followers quipped.

What explains the DNC's advantage? Seems like Bernie buzz + Clinton's historic candidacy + all the star power on stage. Here's my full story...

-- Plus: I thought this was interesting: Facebook conversation data almost perfectly mirrored the TV ratings race. DNC day one had 39.7 million related "likes, posts, comments and shares" from 10 million people, according to Facebook, while RNC day one had 28.6 million such interactions from 8.5 million people...
CNN handily wins night one
CNN had 6.2 million viewers from 10 til 11:30pm last night; MSNBC was #2 with 4.6 mil; and NBC was #3 with 4.3 mil. This is a change from four years ago, when NBC was #1, MSNBC was #2 and CNN was #3.

Stephen Battaglio writes: "CNN was up 70% compared with the first night of the 2012 gathering of Democrats, while MSNBC gained 14% and Fox was up 48%." Fox was in its unusual, but usual-for-the-DNC, runner-up position...

So all of the cablers gained ground... Another data point for the "cable TV election..."

-- Related: By Chris Cillizza: "Cable TV is the one indispensable item of a Trump's candidacy. It sits at the center of his days — and all he does in them..."
Higher DNC viewership than in 2012
Here's a helpful stat the next time someone tells you that traditional TV is on the decline and that everyone's watching live streams and smart phones instead:

 >> Measuring solely traditional TV viewership, Monday night's DNC coverage across broadcast and cable was higher-rated overall (26 mil) than the first night in 2012 (22 mil)... And if you add PBS #'s, last night's total is north of 28 mil...
Brian Lowry's take
Brian Lowry emails: While it's a pattern we've seen on a quadrennial basis, it¹s nevertheless fascinating to see MSNBC's ratings surge during the DNC while Fox News soars during the RNC. The clear inference would be that people are more likely to watch the conventions if they already have an affinity for the party, and that when they do, they prefer watching on a channel that they see as providing more of a home-team advantage. CNN comes off a little bit like Switzerland in this regard (the sniping from the right notwithstanding), tending not to fluctuate quite as dramatically. And while the nightly TV ratings don't fully reflect the ripple effects from the coverage, it is worth noting that the ratings for these early nights are relatively small, accounting for 10-15% of eligible voters...
Decisions, decisions
Tim Graham tweets: "PBS SKIPPED Benghazi and Fast & Furious videos last week, but are running Hillary/'Mothers of the Movement film.... PBS gave Patricia Smith about three minutes last Monday night. PBS gave these grieving moms their full 9 minutes, 15 seconds."

Brian Lowry tweets: "Fox News only cable network not covering Black Lives Matter presentation live. O'Reilly interviewing Karl Rove, goes to commercial."
Grayson in altercation with Politico reporter
"Florida congressman and Senate candidate Alan Grayson threatened to have Politico reporter Edward Isaac-Dovere arrested today after the reporter asked him questions about allegations of domestic abuse that his ex-wife has made against him." Frank Pallotta and Dylan Byers will catch you up on the story here...
Fox News after Roger Ailes
Ailes joining Trump campaign? Trump's response...
In an interview with THR today, Donald Trump didn't rule out a role on his campaign for Roger Ailes. He said the topic has yet to be "broached." The key quote: "Roger has never mentioned it to me at all. I would think about it. We have a great team. We have a great campaign going. But Roger is a very capable guy and he's a friend of mine..."
Rupert writes...
Rupert Murdoch's memo to Fox Newsers this afternoon: "There's no doubt this has been a challenging time. Amid the conventions and multitude of domestic and international breaking news stories, we had to face being the news last week as well." Via Dylan Byers, here's what Murdoch wrote, congratulating his staff on beating the broadcasters and others cablers during the RNC...
The "Mad Men" era
Ailes continues to deny the sexual harassment allegations against him. But "even before they are adjudicated, they are a reminder of the attitudes that held sway in the industry in the 'Mad Men' era in which Ailes came of age professionally, and that have taken far too long to erode," Brian Lowry writes in this must-read column.

For decades, in the male-dominated media biz, "there seemed to be a tacit understanding among those who did that boorishness wouldn't carry consequences, and little evidence of concern that the women involved would have any recourse... But there has been a generational shift" in leadership... Read more here...

Apple Music buys "Carpool Karaoke"
What a deal. Frank Pallotta reports that "Carpool Karaoke" has a surprise passenger: Apple Music. The series that James Corden and co. were shopping... A spin-off of his incredibly popular "Late Late Show" bit... Has been sold to the streaming music/video service. The initial order is for 16 episodes. CBS Television Studios is producing... Details here...

-- No Corden? The host is TBD...
-- HuffPost headline: "Apple just pulled a Netflix"
-- Bloomberg's Lucas Shaw tweets: "Since CBS has an online video service, here's guessing Apple paid up..."
For the record
-- Dave Itzkoff interviewed Sarah Silverman about her "ridiculous" message at the DNC last night... (NYT)
-- And speaking of last night, actress Susan Sarandon was not a happy camper... And Lisa France wrote all about it... (CNN)
-- And another one from Lisa: The Duggar clan of TLC fame just keeps on growing. Jinger Duggar, who is child number 6 out of 19, is engaged... (CNN)
-- "Oprah Winfrey is reuniting with director Ava DuVernay for her next project A Wrinkle in Time..." (THR)
