The anti-Trump movement loses on its last stand

Loud cries of protest broke out on the floor of the Republican National Convention on Monday after GOP officials dismissed a last-ditch effort by anti-Donald Trump groups to force an embarrassing vote against the RNC and the presumptive presidential nominee, CNN's Tal Kopan and Tom LoBianco report.

So what the heck happened? Anti-Trump delegates tried to force a vote on the rules that govern the entire convention. But they lost two loud voice votes -- and then their signature-collection drive to force a roll call vote was rejected, with the convention chairman saying they didn't have enough signatures.

This was also about Ted Cruz 2020. Opponents of the rules were led by Cruz allies -- including Virginia's Ken Cuccinelli and Utah Sen. Mike Lee. They have been fighting to change the procedures for the 2020 presidential election, including trying to close primaries and caucuses from non-Republicans. Such a move would presumably help a party favorite like Cruz, who lost to the outsider Trump this year. "I would like to have conservative candidates in the future," Lee said.

STRAIGHT UP

'Not being coy here: I have no idea of what's going on here right now. This is surreal.'

BAR TALK

Tonight's RNC headliner: Melania Trump

Just after 10 p.m. ET, Donald Trump's former model wife, Melania Trump -- who's shied away from speaking roles on the campaign trail -- will step onto the stage to give the most anticipated speech of the first night of the Republican National Convention. Also highly anticipated: her husband's introduction.

How it came together, from CNN's Sara Murray: When Trump aides first approached her about the speech, they expected a "no." But Melania Trump -- eager for voters to get to know the personal side of her husband -- quickly agreed. She's worked with a speechwriter for five to six weeks and will use a teleprompter. "She's a very, very confident person" who "appeals to a different demographic," an adviser said.

Where she came from: The New York Times' Jason Horowitz went to Slovenia and dug into Melania Trump's upbringing. Among the nuggets he found: Her father wears some of Donald Trump's old leather jackets.

What else is coming up this week? Here's my viewers guide.

BUZZING

A few of the scenes from Day One at the Republican National Convention:

LAST CALL

Trump's speech model: Nixon 1968

From CNN's Ashley Killough: Donald Trump's Thursday night speech will be modeled after Richard Nixon's address in 1968 -- heavy on the "law and order" theme, campaign chairman Paul Manafort said at a Bloomberg breakfast.

The guy Trump can't bring to Cleveland: Don King. Just catch the first couple of lines of this great story from The New York Times' Jonathan Martin and Jeremy W. Peters: "Donald J. Trump was told, no, it was not sensible to have Don King, the flamboyant boxing promoter, address the Republican convention. But Mr. Trump, who has repeatedly boasted of having Mr. King's support, kept pressing the matter. Finally, officials including Reince Priebus, the Republican national chairman, firmly explained to Mr. Trump why Mr. King should not be invited: He once stomped a man to death and was convicted of manslaughter."

Trump camp lashes out at Kasich

Ohio Gov. John Kasich will not attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this week, and Donald Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort think that's a shame. "He's hurting his state. He's embarrassing his state, frankly," Manafort said Monday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," per CNN's Tom Kludt.

Another swing at Kasich, from Cleveland-area Republican Rep. Jim Renacci: "I think Republicans too many times are happy with a loss to prove a point versus coming together to win."

Here's how Kasich strategist John Weaver responded:
Ohio Republican Party Chairman Matt Borges didn't like Manafort's remarks, either.

Fox News chief's days numbered?

Today brought two big scoops on Fox News chief Roger Ailes, who faces sexual harassment charges from Gretchen Carlson and other women:

-- Rupert Murdoch and his sons have settled on removing Ailes -- the only question is when, and whether to wait until after the Republican National Convention, reports New York Magazine's Gabriel Sherman.

-- In confidential interviews with CNNMoney, several women who formerly held on-air jobs at Fox said they believed Carlson's allegations and have stories of their own. But the women were reluctant to talk, citing restrictive contract language, per CNN's Brian Stelter.

CLOSING TIME

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro violated the Hatch Act in an interview with Katie Couric by blending his support for Hillary Clinton with official business. ... Clinton says she'll "bring the full weight of the law" against people who kill police officers. ... The story you absolutely have to read today: Politico's Glenn Thrush's take on Barack Obama and Clinton -- a "party of two."
