1. Colombia peace deal

Colombia worked for years to hammer out a deal with FARC rebels -- and end the longest-running war in the Americas. All that was left was for the voters to sign on. But they didn't. After 52 years and 220,000 deaths, some Colombians are just not OK with the rebels getting zero prison timeNo one is quite sure what to do now because there's no Plan B. So, it's back to the drawing board.

2. Campaign 2016

Someone mailed a couple of pages from Donald Trump's 1995 state tax returns to the NYT, which then dropped this bombshell: he lost $916 million -- enough to legally not pay income taxes for perhaps two decades. The only way to know is for Trump to release his tax records, but you know how he feels about that. Here are six questions on the political fallout and here's why this is so stunning.

3. Hurricane Matthew

Jamaica is prepping for its first major hurricane in almost 30 years. And Hurricane Matthew could be a monster one. Storm surges up to 10 feet; 130-mph winds; 25-40 inches of rain. People are lining up for gas, putting out sandbags and hunkering down in churches. After that, Matthew heads north, where it's expected to slam into Guantanamo Bay.

4. Afghanistan

Afghan forces are fighting to prevent Kunduz from falling into the hands of the Taliban, which launched a pre-dawn attack on the city from four directions. Afghanistan doesn't want to see a repeat of last year when the Taliban briefly overtook Kunduz, freed hundreds of inmates and raised their flag at points around town. Here's why Kunduz matters.

5. Police shooting

Over the weekend, there was another fatal police shooting of a black man, this time in L.A. Eighteen-year-old Carnell Snell Jr. was killed after a brief police chase. Protesters gathered and marched through the night, but things remained peaceful. It's the latest in a string of recent police shootings of black men: El Cajon; Tulsa; and Charlotte.
