Trump, Clinton show contrasting terrorism approaches

Donald Trump is emphasizing the terror threat and Hillary Clinton is projecting calm -- but only one of them can be right about how the shock of new attacks will shape a tight election that is now only 50 days away, writes CNN's Stephen Collinson. Here's how he lays out their dueling approaches:

Trump: The Republican nominee is betting that voters are so traumatized and fearful about continuing terror attacks -- or believe that they are not being combated effectively enough -- that they demand a new playbook and reject those, including Clinton, who embraced the old one. "This is only going to get worse," Trump warned on "Fox and Friends" on Monday, echoing warnings by US authorities that more homegrown attacks are likely.

His attack of the day, at a rally in Florida: "Hillary Clinton talks tougher about my supporters than she does about radical Islamic terrorists."

Clinton: The former secretary of state is wagering that voters will reject the more draconian measures favored by Trump and instead back a candidate with an even temperament and years of experience pulling the levers of government power, one who is electing to stay within the current boundaries of law enforcement and military doctrine. "I know how to do this," Clinton said, summing up her argument at an airport tarmac news conference Monday.

Her attack of the day, at her news conference: "I am prepared to, ready to actually take on those challenges, not engage in a lot of irresponsible, reckless rhetoric."

Trump also brawled with Andrew Cuomo, the New York governor, over racial profiling and how the suspect arrested today is being treated, per CNN's Daniella Diaz.

Christie's new 'Bridgegate' trouble

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie faced the accusation he'd spent years avoiding Monday when prosecutors said -- per The New York Times' Kate Zernike -- that he "knew that his close associates were involved in a plan to shut down lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge as it was happening and that the closings were intended to punish a local mayor for declining to support him."

This is a bombshell that could permanently hobble Christie -- who, by the way, is leading Donald Trump's transition effort.

STRAIGHT UP

"I'm only 93, so maybe I'll run again when I'm a little older and have a little more wisdom."

-- Bob Dole, the 1996 GOP nominee, to the Topeka Capital-Journal on his political future.

BAR TALK

Can Trump and 'Morning Joe' get along again?

From CNN's Dylan ByersJoe Scarborough wants to make nice with Donald Trump. Last week, Scarborough and his "Morning Joe" co-host, Mika Brzezinski, visited the Republican presidential nominee at Trump Tower to rekindle a once-rosy relationship that has turned bitter and adversarial, sources with knowledge of the meeting told CNNMoney. The three also discussed the possibility of conducting an interview for "Morning Joe," though nothing was decided or finalized, one of the sources said.

Trump's retreat to friendly ground: Per CNN's Brian Stelter, Trump is saying "yes" to Fox News almost every day but saying "no" to most other major networks and news organizations -- a highly unusual strategy for a presidential nominee. He called in to "Fox & Friends" on Monday morning, he is booked on "The O'Reilly Factor" Monday night, and he has another town hall with Sean Hannity coming up on Wednesday.

What Trump told Bill O'Reilly, after complaining about the debate moderators being Democrats, per early excerpts from the interview: "I'll show up. Look, they're gaming the ref."

BUZZING

That's Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe hanging out with Willie Nelson -- and, on the table in the round jar by the remote control, Nelson's "Willie's Reserve" brand of weed -- at the Jiffy Lube Live music center in Bristow, Virginia, on Saturday night. The picture was tweeted by Nelson's wife, Annie Nelson.

The best part of this story? This quote from McAuliffe spokesman Brian Coy, to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, on why the governor couldn't possibly have known that was weed sitting on the table: "He was not and still is not aware of whatever was on the table or anywhere around him and wouldn't know marijuana or related paraphernalia if it walked up and shook his hand. He's cool, but he's not that cool."

LAST CALL

Clinton attempts to build a North Carolina firewall

From CNN's Nia-Malika Henderson in Raleigh: Hillary Clinton -- facing a dramatically tightening race and a troubling lack of enthusiasm -- is looking to this steadily changing state as an opportunity to stabilize her path to the White House and force Republicans to play offense. One reason it's a target: The state has an influx of new residents drawn to a tech boom in cities like Charlotte and Raleigh. The population growth has swelled the ranks of unaffiliated and more educated voters.

CLOSING TIME

Ivanka Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan met today during Ryan's trip to New York. ... A group of former national security officials and experts are calling on Donald Trump to disclose his overseas business dealings. ... Republicans have started pumping money into Sen. Roy Blunt's effort to fend off a strong challenge from Democrat Jason Kander
