Fox News probe continues; CNN's next town hall; changing "View;" Hulu's new co-owner; Khizr Khan interview; eye exam for Bob Costas

Protecting Fox's "voice"
Even without Roger Ailes, Fox News will retain Ailes' conservative view of the world. That's what Lachlan Murdoch reassured Wall Street analysts on a quarterly earnings call this afternoon -- rebuffing speculation that the network's political bent or tone might change. Acknowledging Ailes' exit, Lachlan said: "Throughout this process we have moved quickly and decisively to protect the business, to protect its employees, and to protect the unique and important voice Fox News broadcasts."

The "protect its employees" phrase stood out. Click here for my full story...
Ailes "gorging"
Lachlan pointedly called his father Rupert Murdoch the "founder" of Fox News, which I'm sure Ailes interpreted as a snub. Meanwhile, what's Ailes up to? The NY Daily News published a photo of the unemployed exec "wearing his plaid pajamas pants and slippers while gorging on plates of bacon and eggs at a diner in Closter, N.J., Tuesday." Ailes would've published the same thing about a rival, but this still felt kinda gross...
The Paul, Weiss probe continues
Last week sources told me that the Paul, Weiss probe was "winding down." But then came Gabriel Sherman's harrowing story about Laurie Luhn, alleging "psychological torture" and 20 years of harassment by Ailes, and revealing what is said to be a $3.15 million settlement payment. Sherman's story also said that Luhn contacted Paul, Weiss — not the other way around. This caused Bruce Schaeffer, a lawyer for another potential Ailes accuser, ex-anchor Laurie Dhue, to issue a statement questioning the legitimacy of the law firm's work. 21st Century Fox, in turn, said on the record that the firm is "dealing with any and all issues as they arise." Hmmm.

This afternoon NYT's Jim Rutenberg and Ben Protess were first to report that the investigators ARE examining whether "other executives knew of improper behavior by Mr. Ailes and failed to act on it." They added: "More current and former Fox News employees [are] scheduled for interviews." No word from Schaeffer on whether Dhue is one of them...
Unanswered Q's
The way I see it, there are two sets of unanswered questions. One set of Q's are about the people above Ailes, the Murdochs. Did they know anything about the alleged harassment? And if they didn't -- why not? Fox News was a fiefdom, several sources emphasized. "Access to the Murdochs went through Roger," one said. "Roger made the rules, so there was no one above him acting as a court of last resort," another said...

The other set of Q's are about the people below Ailes, his lieutenants. What did they know? Rumors are still running rampant about a "housecleaning." But if you're picturing chaos at 1211, think again. "It's been kind of amazing, how quickly things have gotten back to normal," one of Fox's stars told me tonight...
Hulu's new co-owner
Time Warner is now Hulu's fourth parent, paying about $580 million for a 10% stake, thereby valuing the company at $5.8 billion. The news broke this morning. Separately, Time Warner's Turner unit and Hulu have signed a carriage deal, so CNN, TBS, TNT, etc will be available on Hulu's live streaming service, launching early next year. More...
-- What TWX is thinking: Via the WSJ: "Jeff Bewkes said on an earnings call with analysts that the investment will 'increase our company's exposure to the secular growth in over-the-top,' or internet TV. He said it would also give Hulu more resources to invest in programming and will help foster 'competition and innovation' among streaming services and traditional cable TV distributors..."

New faces on "The View"
Chloe Melas has a double dose of news about "The View:" Whoopi Goldberg began the day by slamming The Daily Mail for a report that said she was responsible for cutting back the days that Paula Faris appears on the show. "I do not run ABC," she tweeted...

Then this afternoon, ABC formalized some casting changes: Sara Haines is now an official co-host, while Jedediah Bila and Sunny Hostin are now contributors. Bila, formerly of "Outnumbered" on Fox News, is leaving Fox, BTW...
Life advice from Tony Bennett
Chloe emails from Tony Bennett's 90th birthday bash at the Rainbow Room: He told me his words to live by are "be honest." Life has gone way too fast, he said, but he feels younger than ever. Here celebrating with him: John Travolta, Lady Gaga, Gov. Cuomo, Stevie Wonder and Katie Couric...

96 days to Election Day
Just announced...
The latest sign that CNN wants to be known as the destination for town halls: Right after tonight's Libertarian town hall with Gary Johnson and William Weld, CNN announced a Green Party town hall with Jill Stein and Ajamu Baraka. Eli Watkins writes: "The hour-long event will be held on Wednesday, August 17 at 9:00 p.m. ET..."

Trump's media bias missives
Donald Trump's newest tactic: Email blasts about media bias, circling print headlines and accusing outlets like the NYT of unfairness. Mediaite has details here. It reminds me of the printouts with hand-written notes that Trump used to send to some of us...

Khan taking a break from TV
This is the first day in almost a week that Khizr Khan hasn't been on TV denouncing Trump. He's stepping away from the mic… For now… But he told me that he'll continue to urge people to vote.

The interview circuit took its toll. The hate mail he's been getting is horrific. But Khan came away from his sudden burst of fame really believing that the media is "the fourth pillar of democracy." Here's my full interview with him…

Giving Instagram Stories a chance
The Snapchat-Instagram war remains top of mind today... With dozens of new stories about it...

Special correspondent/my wife Jamie Stelter writes: I started the day really annoyed that Instagram was trying to be Snapchat, just not doing as good a job at it. I wanted the fun filters and I didn't think I was interested in my Instagram friends' minute-by-minute videos. (That's for the people I choose to follow on Snapchat.) Plus, it was a blatant ripoff. But when I read Dan Frommer's Recode story -- where Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom says, "this is about a format, and how you take it to a network and put your own spin on it" -- it started to make sense.

I played with it all day, and I do like that you can pause an Instagram story (press your finger in the middle of the screen, hold down) and go back to the previous frame (tap on the left side of the screen), two things you can't do on Snapchat. I've loved Instagram for a long time; I'll keep an open mind...
Brian Lowry reviews "Suicide Squad"
Brian Lowry emails: Warner Bros. continues to exhibit a bit of what might be called "Marvel envy," trying to jumpstart its cinematic universe while skipping several key steps. So while "Suicide Squad" is poised to have a huge opening, the bludgeoning from critics — triggering conspiracy theories among die-hard fans — suggests it might suffer the same fate as "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," which is to say everyone dying to see the movies goes right away, and the numbers then sink precipitously. It's also worth noting that the movie's closest cousin might really be a TV show — the dark Fox drama "Gotham." Only in this PG-13-rated extravaganza, they have a much-expanded budget and a freer roster of swear words. Read more...
