Trump not 'softening' on immigration, son says

The day before Donald Trump's highly anticipated Arizona speech on immigration, his son Donald Trump Jr. offered some insight in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper set to air at 8 ET tonight. He said his father "wasn't softening on anything" -- implying Trump still stands by his calls for a "deportation force" to round up and remove all undocumented immigrants from the United States.

Trump Jr. was explaining a strange moment when Trump appeared to poll the audience during a town hall last week with pro-Trump Fox News host Sean Hannity. "He wasn't softening on anything. He didn't change his stance on anything," Trump Jr. said. "What he did was, and what he's done all along is, he's speaking with the people. He's not lecturing them like most of the politicians you see today. He's actually having a conversation." He added: "He basically surveyed the room and asked, 'Hey, what are your thoughts on this? I want to take that because I want to take into account what the people say.'"

The key question: Will Trump -- for whom a no-compromises approach to immigration has been an animating cause of his campaign -- drop his Republican primary season calls for a "deportation force"?

BAR TALK

Benghazi emails renew Clinton controversy

The FBI discovered about 30 emails related to the 2012 Benghazi attack in its investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server, The Associated Press' Eric Tucker and Michael Biesecker reported today.

It's part of the drip, drip, drip email controversy. Here's the next drip, from CNN's Evan Perez: The FBI expects to publicly release as soon as Wednesday the report the bureau sent to the Justice Department in July recommending no charges in the Clinton email server investigation, according to multiple law enforcement officials. Also to be released are the FBI agent notes from Clinton's voluntary interview at FBI headquarters. The report is about 30 pages, and the interview notes are about a dozen pages, according to the officials.

The Clinton Foundation -- the other controversy that Clinton can't put to rest -- is also in the news today. The New York Times' editorial board called for it to "ban contributions from foreign and corporate entities now. If Mrs. Clinton wins, Bill and Chelsea Clinton should both end their operational involvement in the foundation and its affiliates for the duration of her presidency, relinquishing any control over spending, hiring and board appointments.

LAST CALL

It's primary day in Arizona and Florida

Two well-known establishment figures face challenges from their respective party's insurgent wing in Tuesday primaries, as GOP Sen. John McCain and Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz battle to retain their spots in Congress.

McCain's challenge comes from Kelli Ward, who's spent the last few days essentially calling the 80-year-old, five-term senator too old. Wasserman Schultz faces Tim Canova, who was endorsed by Bernie Sanders -- but didn't get on-the-ground help from the Vermont senator.

Also on the ballot today: Marco Rubio, who's facing self-funded Carlos Beruff in the Florida GOP Senate primary. Rubio is being careful not to alienate Donald Trump supporters. "The primary is over," Rubio told CNN's Manu Raju in an interview Monday after a campaign appearance with veterans in Fort Myers. "Republican voters chose a nominee and we have a choice between two people ... I do disagree with Donald on a number of things. I disagree with Hillary [Clinton] on everything."

The polls close in Florida at 7 p.m. ET and in Arizona at 10 p.m. ET. Here's my preview.

Trump's campaign CEO's incendiary remarks scrutinized

When Donald Trump tapped Breitbart executive Steve Bannon as his campaign CEO weeks ago, it was clear he was getting a provocateur. Now, some of Bannon's provocative moments are being scrutinized -- and tied to Trump.

He said in a 2011 radio interview uncovered by BuzzFeed's Andrew Kaczynski and Nathaniel Meyersohn that liberals dislike women like Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and Ann Coulter because they're not "a bunch of dykes that came from the Seven Sisters schools up in New England."

He also bashed Mormon missions -- particularly those of Mitt Romney's sons -- with Family Radio in 2012. "This is a guy who avoided military duty in Vietnam; who has five sons who look like movie stars who have not served their country one day. Oh, but by the way all of them did their two years of Mormon missionary service -- every one of them," Bannon said.
