AP editor answers critics
The AP's top editor, Kathleen Carroll, says the newswire's much-scrutinized Clinton Foundation investigation was "rock solid," but the inaccurate promotional tweet about it was "sloppy."

"We're a lot better at breaking stories and covering news and gathering video and taking photographs than we are on tweets," she told me on this morning's show. However, Carroll stood by the AP's decision not to delete the tweet. "Maybe, going forward, we need to work more on our precision on the tweets." Alex Koppelman has a full summary of the interview here... And you can watch it here...

-- Another recent tweet from the AP, saying "Dwyane Wade and Donald Trump speak out on Twitter in wake of the NBA star's cousin's fatal shooting," was "clumsy," Carroll acknowledged. She said execs will be talking with the social media team about the recent misfires...

-- Worth reading: A rebuttal by ThinkProgress EIC Judd Legum: "It is likely that far more people would read a 'sloppy' 140-character tweet than a lengthy story about Clinton's schedule. Dismissing the tweet as a side issue fails to recognize the importance of social media in the AP's own reporting and distribution strategies..."

-- An emailer adds: the AP is "fighting against Clinton and State stonewalling them, both on the records and the questions they'd want to ask. IMHO they at least deserve credit for that despite the screw ups..."
"They ought to have their calendars scrutinized"
Dylan Byers wrote on Friday about why the AP's Clinton Foundation story was "arguably misleading." This is a helpful primer on the controversy.

Carroll took a different tack on this morning's show, portraying the AP's reporters as dogged investigators who did exactly what journalists are supposed to do, even going to court to get ahold of documents. "People who are aspiring to the highest office in the land... they ought to have their calendars scrutinized," she said. (Yes. But even the shorthand version of the findings should be portrayed accurately.)

-- Noted: Carroll suggested that the campaign should have been responsive to its questions before publication...
Charles Osgood retiring from "CBS Sunday Morning"
Sunday mornings will not be the same. This morning Charles Osgood told viewers that "the rumors are true" -- he's retiring from "CBS Sunday Morning" on September 25. He's been hosting the program for 22 years, and he's worked at CBS News for 45 years.

Osgood in his own words: "For years now people -- even friends and family -- have been asking me why I keep doing this considering my age. I am pushing 84. It's just that it's been such a joy doing it! Who wouldn't want to be the one who gets to introduce these terrific storytellers and the producers and writers and others who put this wonderful show together. I want to thank all of them and all of you in our still-growing audience for your support and encouragement. It's been a great run, but after nearly 50 years at CBS, including the last 22 years here on 'Sunday Morning,' the time has come. The date is set for me to do my farewell 'Sunday Morning.'" Here's my full story...

-- CBS News says he will continue to make "occasional appearances" on the program... And Osgood will continue to host his daily news commentaries for CBS Radio...
-- The Sept. 25 broadcast will be a "special edition" dedicated to Osgood's career...
-- CBS wanted today to be all about Osgood. No announcement about a new host. But Jane Pauley is seen as the most likely successor...
Ramos on "Reliable Sources"
Jorge Ramos's column saying that "neutrality is not an option" when covering Donald Trump stoked controversy this past week. "At the very least, Univision should remove Ramos from the network's national evening news anchor chair, from now through Election Day," Brent Bozell said Friday.

I asked Ramos to respond on this morning's show. (Earlier in the segment, he had invoked Joe McCarthy while describing Trump.) "Well, what I can tell them is that I have been doing this job almost 30 years," he said... "And I think I am just a journalist asking questions. And I believe completely in objectivity. If 5 people die, we say 5. If it is red, it is red. But the other level of journalism is that it is our responsibility to question those who are in power. And that's I think precisely what I'm doing with Donald Trump, because what are we going to do? If a candidate is making racist remarks, what are we supposed to do? Are we supposed just to sit down silently and listen to him? No, I think precisely our job as journalists is to question them."

Bozell's NewsBusters site responded this afternoon...
Ramos still hasn't gotten that Trump interview
Remember the Q's a few months ago about whether Trump would sit down with Ramos? Trump still hasn't said yes. "Maybe you can help me," Ramos said to me. He also said it is "almost impossible" to book Trump spokespeople for his Spanish-language Sunday talk show "Al Punto." Watch the full segment here...

-- More: Ramos said he believes Trump is in "panic mode with Latinos" now...
Trump objecting to "Morning Joe" (again)
A scooplet from this A.M.: Trump says MSNBC and specifically Mika Brzezinski should "immediately" apologize to one of his prominent supporters, Pastor Mark Burns. He describes Friday's "Morning Joe" segment with Burns as a "coordinated gang attack" and "one of the most appalling things I have ever seen on television."

The segment was contentious, to say the least. The website Mediaite described the segment this way: "Brzezinski Browbeats Black Pro-Trump Pastor: Is It Racist, Yes or No?"

Here's my full story + Trump's statement. Will be curious to see if "Morning Joe" responds in the morning...

-- Jamil Smith responded on this morning's show: "My theory is, it's part of his black pitch... When you have a guy speaking out, defending a black surrogate against a white host, so to speak, what you have here is a guy here saying, 'Hey, look, I'm not racist.' I'm defending my black surrogate..."
About Fox's settlement talks...
Last week Sarah Ellison's VF story about Roger Ailes said 21st Century Fox had started "settlement discussions with Carlson and two others who allege they were harassed by Ailes." Why, I wondered, were only three women engaged in settlement talks, when so many more spoke to the investigators? Gabriel Sherman suggests an answer with this tweet today: "2 sources briefed on PW investigation say 21CF in settlement talks w/ only 3 women whose harassment by Ailes is within statute of limitation..."
ICYMI: the "oppo research" against Gabe Sherman
From Friday: This anti-Sherman research, which I obtained from 2 sources, circulated inside Fox News. It has all the markings of "opposition research" about a political enemy. It includes property records, voter registration information, a note that the researchers could find no criminal record for Sherman, plus an "Internet dredge" of notable tweets, blog comments about him, and an NYT write-up of his wedding. Here's my full story...
71 days til Election Day
Laura Ingraham helping Trump prep
CNN's Jim Acosta confirms tonight that Trump had a debate prep meeting with advisers earlier today. Roger Ailes reportedly remains involved as a Trump "confidant," as Robert Costa put it. Costa and co. reported yesterday that radio host Laura Ingraham is also helping with prep -- and that "some associates are talking about casting Ingraham, an adversarial chronicler of Clinton scandals, to play the Democratic nominee."

I asked Ingraham for comment; she didn't respond. Notably, one of her employers, Fox News, repeatedly talked about the WashPost report this morning...
Clinton camp playing debate expectations setting game
1: Clinton press secretary Brian Fallon tweets: "For all his lack of substance, Trump's showmanship, as ex-TV star, makes him a formidable debate foe. He thrashed his rivals in GOP debates..."

2: Julie Pace on "Inside Politics" this morning: "The Clinton campaign feels like she is going to go into the debates with the heightened expectations that normally saddle an incumbent president while Trump will have a low bar to clear. We'll start to see officials reminding reporters and voters that Trump was actually pretty good in his Republican debates and obviously has a lot of experience being on television..."
Who will moderate?
Speaking of the debates... Frank Sesno and I handicapped the debate moderator selection process on "Smerconish" yesterday... Watch here...
NYT CEO has op-ed in the paper
Mark Thompson has a book coming out on Sept. 1. So in today's NYT he has an essay about Trump and the "dark art of straight talk" that doubles as a promo for the book... Here it is...
Quote of the day
"They're in the hate business. They're a bunch of nuts... There's this whole alt-right thing, which I think is just repackaged racism, trying to put a better name on it, and xenophobia."

--Stuart Stevens, Mitt Romney's top strategist in 2012, talking about Breitbart News and the "alt right" on this morning's show...
Highlights from today's show
Scottie Nell Hughes, J.D. Vance and Jamil Smith talk about "social anxiety" as a factor in Trump's success... Stuart Stevens says Clinton should give a press conference, but he understands why she isn't...
"The Night of" finale tonight...
It's super-long... About 1 hour and 45 minutes... So make sure your DVR is set appropriately. And no spoilers, please, because Jamie and I won't be watching til Monday afternoon...
VMAs at MSG tonight
Chloe Melas is already on the VMAs red carpet. Check her Twitter feed for updates. Here's her rundown of five reasons to watch... Including Beyonce, Rihanna, and Britney Spears...

-- Related: Frank Pallotta talks with the awards show's EP about the MSG broadcast: It "represents one of the greatest stages in the world and one of the most iconic venues in entertainment that exists..."
