The Point: Biden sees some ☀️ in California poll

Biden sees some ☀️ in California poll

Despite a cloud of controversy over the beginnings of a possible 2020 campaign, Joe Biden got some sunny news in a poll of California Democrats out Wednesday.

A whopping 71% of Golden State Democrats said the fact that Biden has been accused of touching women in a way that made them feel uncomfortable was not a serious issue, according to a new Quinnipiac poll.

The number is surely welcome news to Biden's team, which has been seeking to respond to allegations by two women that the former vice president touched them inappropriately.

Yes, this is a state-specific poll, but it's not just any state. California is delegate-rich (with 55 Electoral College votes) and a candidate's in-state support can give us a better idea of where things could be headed for a potential candidate than a nationwide favorability poll.

Because, you know, the Electoral College.

The poll also found 26% support for Biden among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independent voters, meaning Biden's also the party's front-runner in California (for now). And this far out, that's good news for the former VP.

Especially since Biden's up against California native Kamala Harris, who's polling in third with 17% (Bernie Sanders separates the two, with 18% support).

As polling pro Grace Sparks wrote back in December, history shows it is a VERY good thing to be at the front of the pack this far out.

In open primaries since 1996, "the candidate who went on to win their primary was in the top three of an aggregate of polls taken between November (post-election) and January (two years before the election) 7 out of 9 times."

The Point: After a bruising news cycle, Biden's still got the momentum -- now he just needs to make his run official.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"There's only one person that's running it. You know who that is? Me."

🎶GRAMMYS ON THE HILL 🎶

Sen. Chuck Grassley and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries just received Grammys -- kinda.

The Iowa Republican and New York Democrat were honored by the Grammys for helping pass the Music Modernization Act in a special ceremony held in Washington on Tuesday night. The law updated protections for the music industry around royalties, access and ownership in the streaming age.

Here's to hoping they cross the aisle and release a song!

Today's topic: Bernie Sanders' truly awful answer on his millionaire status.

WHAT-THE WEDNESDAY 🐊

Terry McAuliffe is bullish on his challenge to President Donald Trump.

"Of all the candidates running, how many have actually wrestled a 280-pound, 8 foot alligator for a political contribution of $15,000," the former Virginia governor said today. "How many? I am your man, folks. If I can wrestle an alligator, I can sure as hell wrestle Donald Trump."

That wrestling an alligator thing isn't a metaphor, either.

McAuliffe ACTUALLY wrestled an alligator -- for a campaign donation -- and it wasn't even his own campaign.

It happened in 1980, when McAuliffe was 23 and fundraising for the Jimmy Carter presidential campaign.

McAuliffe successfully survived three minutes atop Jumper the alligator -- and secured a $15,000 donation from the Seminole Tribe to the Carter campaign.

LAUREN'S CAMPAIGN LATEST

Elizabeth Warren: Raised $6 million in the first quarter of 2019, her campaign announced today.

Michael Bennet: Made an Iowa campaign stop as the Colorado senator considers a presidential run -- and will soon undergo treatment for prostate cancer. If all goes well with the upcoming surgery, he'll jump into the 2020 race, he said.

Jay Inslee: Participates in his CNN town hall tonight airing at 10 p.m Eastern. Fun fact, the single-issue candidate (focused on combating climate change) also has written children's books (for his grandkids) about climate change.

Bernie Sanders: Confirmed he is a millionaire, saying "I wrote a best-selling book. If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too." He plans to release 10 years of tax returns in the coming days.

👶 AND THEN THERE WERE 10 👶

President Donald Trump has another grandchild on the way (a 10th! notes CNN's Kate Bennett).

Eric Trump and his wife, Lara, are expecting a second child, due in August. The President's second-oldest son announced the news via Twitter.
