That time the Russians hacked us...

December 13, 2016
Aleppo is falling, a killer is in court and frankly, it's time to go back to the basics with the whole Russian hacking thing. Here's what you need to know to Get Up to Speed and Out the Door.

By AJ Willingham.

1. Russian hacking

A former senior law enforcement official claims Russian hackers targeted GOP officials and organizations before the election. Trump's team still doesn't believe there is evidence of pro-Trump hacking, but his senior adviser Kellyanne Conway said he would not interfere with any investigation into the matter. Also, here's a primer if you're lost on the scope of this whole thing.

2. Aleppo

Aleppo is set to fall to the Syrian regime, ending a years-long battle for the city. Disturbing reports are coming out that, as neighborhoods fall, executions are being carried about by government forces. Residents of Aleppo are tweeting and messaging final goodbyes just in case, including the family of a 7-year-old who's become famous for tweeting about Aleppo's suffering.

3. Trump transition

Trump tweeted out a promise yesterday to step away from his businesses and focus full-time on the Presidency. "No new deals will be done during my term(s) in office," he said. He also postponed a news conference that will address his potential conflicts of interest for his presidency. That conference will now happen in January.

4. Charleston shooting

Charleston shooter Dylann Roof is on trial for murder in South Carolina. In the courtroom Monday, an FBI agent read aloud a racist rant Roof had penned before he shot and killed nine churchgoers in 2015. Roof has confessed to the crime. On Friday the court saw a video of his confession in which he laughed and appeared calm while discussing the slaughter.

5. Georgia officers

Six officers in the state of Georgia have been shot in the last six days in three separate incidents. Two of the officers did not survive. The shootings occurred in small towns, and are more evidence of a particularly deadly year for law enforcement. As of today, 64 law enforcement officers have died across the US in 2016.
